Oracle Advanced Database Administration


This training explores advanced concepts of the Oracle database administration, and takes its students beyond the essential tasks covered in basic training.

In this course, students gain a conceptual understanding of the Oracle Database Backup/Recovery concepts, and learn how to use it in various ways and situations.  Students also learn how to manage performance, how to optimize database workloads, and how to manage memory effectively. In this course, each module is reinforced with structured hands-on exercises.


Target Audience:
This course is mainly intended for Database Administrators, Database Developers, IT Professionals, and other roles responsible for administering the Oracle database.

– Previous experience with administering Oracle Database.
– Familiarity with PL/SQL is recommended but not mandatory.
– Familiarity with the SQL language concepts and syntax.
– Familiarity with the Oracle Basic Administration concepts.

Course Topics

Module 1 – Recoverability:
Overview, concepts and terminology, using RMAN, configure ARCHIVE LOG mode.

Module 2 – RMAN Catalog:
RMAN repository, Recovery Catalog, creating RMAN catalog server and registering it in the OEM console, Resync Catalog, RMAN Scripts, VPC.

Module 3 – Backup Specifications:
CF autobackups, parallelism, using a Media Manager, Destinations, Duplex Backup Sets, Optimization, Compression, Encryption.

Module 4 – Creating Backups:
Terminology, FIB, Duplexed backup sets, excluding tablespace, KEEP archival backups, Multisection backups, Proxy Copies.

Module 5 – Recovery:
Complete recovery, restore points, incomplete recovery, recovering image copies, NOARCHIVELOG recovery, restoring the DB to a new host.

Module 6 – Tuning RMAN:
Monitoring RMAN, backup and restore steps, parallel backups, Multiplexing, RMAN channels, BACKUP DURATION, Job performance.

Module 7 – Diagnosing the Database:
Recovery advisor, handling block corruption, using the ADR, using support workbench.

Module 8 – Oracle Flashback Technology:
Flashback Query, Flashback Versions, Flashback Transaction, Flashback table to before drop, Flashback Data Archive, Flashback Database.

Module 9 – Memory Management:
Configuring the SGA (shared pool, buffer cache, redo log buffer, large pool etc.) and PGA, managing memory components.

Module 10 – Tuning Advisors:
Monitor performance, Oracle statistics, SQL Profile, materialized views, Tunning Advisor, Access Advisor, DB replay.

Module 11 – Resource Management:
Resumable space allocation, Transportable tablespace, Resource manager.

Module 12 – Oracle Scheduler:
Scheduler basics, complex schedules, event based schedules, job chains, advanced concepts.

Module 13 – Advanced Storage Management:
Basic space management, extent management, block management.
